Saturn Vue Hybrid 2-Mode Cancelled

terrain-plug-in-hybrid-speculation.jpgIn March of 2008 we announced that the upcoming 2009 Saturn Vue hybrid, the one that would be built with GM’s 2-mode hybrid system, might possibly end up being the most popular hybrid SUV yet. What we were most excited about was the chance to finally see how the two mode hybrid technology would perform in a smaller, front wheel drive sport utility, rather than the much larger hybrid Yukon, Tahoe, or Escalade.

Then in November 0f 2008, rumors started circulating that the 2mode Vue would be delayed or “re-timed” and wouldn’t be launched in late ’08, but it would instead have to wait another 3-4 months. While the GM spokesman made it sound like pushing launch dates back was a normal process, I remember thinking that maybe there was a problem, or possibly the plan had changed.

2009 Detroit Auto Show Saturn Vue Two ModeThe last time we reported on the Two Mode Saturn Vue Green Line was in March, 2008. Since then, there hasn’t been much news…until recently. In November, GM spokesman Brian Corbett announced that the decision had been made to re-time the launch of the 2-mode Vue from December, ’08 to sometime during the first quarter of 2009. While no explanation for the delay re-time was given, Corbett added that GM regularly reviews the status of vehicle launch programs. In any case, a 3 month delay was welcome news when compared to Chrysler announcing they would discontinue the Aspen and Durango hybrid SUVs.

A New Vue in ‘o9It is possible this could end up being the most popular hybrid SUV yet.  Saturn is preparing to begin production of a totally redesigned Vue Green Line, and this time they are using GM’s two-mode hybrid system.  Unlike the mild hybrid Vue that has been around for the past couple of years, the all new Vue will feature the same technology found in the hybrid Tahoe and Yukon.  The difference should be worth the wait.

2008-saturn-vue-suv.jpgSaturn released their first hybrid suv in late 2006 as a 2007 model year, but don’t expect to find many available on dealer lots.  Aptly named the “green line”, production shortages of the GM green machine have made them scarce over the past few months.  Now, the 2008 hybrid Saturn Vue is nearly ready for release – and surprisingly, Saturn isn’t providing much new infomation (link is below, for what it’s worth).
